About Tas Holters

At Tas Holters, we are a locally owned and operated service with a mission to provide comprehensive and efficient Holter monitor reports, and to guide the diagnosis and management of patients with dysrhythmias in the Tasmanian community. Our service is operated by cardiac physiologists under the management of our experienced cardiologist / electrophysiologist and device specialist, Dr. James Mau.

Our Team

Dr. James Mau is a cardiologist, electrophysiologist, and cardiac device implant specialist

Dr. James Mau is a cardiologist, electrophysiologist, and cardiac device implant specialist with extensive experience in the field. He completed his medical degree in 2006 at the University of Sydney prior to being awarded a PhD in Cardiology at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney in 2009. His passion to specialise in electrophysiology and complex device implantation stemmed from exposure to the field during his fellowship training in
cardiothoracic surgery, which was undertaken in Sydney and New Zealand.

Dr. James Mau is a pioneer in advancing and undertaking complex device implantation and regularly trains and proctors electrophysiologists in this skill in Tasmania and the Australian mainland. In addition to being the Director of EP services at the Charles Clinic and managing the busy Tas Holters service, he offers a diverse skill set across many locations in Tasmania with specialisation in complex cardiac device and pacing techniques,
rhythm and heart failure management, as well as general electrophysiology and cardiology.

Our passionate team of cardiac physiologists have extensive experience in several areas of non-invasive cardiac testing including 12-lead ECG interpretation, Holter analysis, exercise and pharmacological stress testing, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and tilt table testing.

All our cardiac physiologists have gained expertise in these testing modalities on the background of qualifications in health, medical and exercise
science. In addition to clinical training at the Charles Clinic, many of our team have also extended upon their foundational knowledge and experience in the field with post-graduate qualifications in clinical physiology and cardiac sonography.

Our Service

  • We are a local service providing regional clinics in the Tasmanian community with up-todate Holter monitors capable of patient event recording (24 hours – 7 days) for correlation to reported symptoms.
  • 24-72-hour report turn around.
  • We provide all consumables (Holter stickers, batteries) as well as software, patient cables, and remote link for simple, secure transfer of patient data for analysis and reporting.
  • Ongoing product and stock maintenance as well as technical support.
  • Incentive payment for your practice taken directly as a ‘fitting fee’ of $30-50 from the patient.
  • Introductory and ongoing education sessions for doctors by Dr. James Mau regarding indications and benefits of Holter monitoring and for practice nurses by cardiac physiologists regarding practical applications of Holter monitoring service.

The Process

1. Referral, Triage and Application

  • Referrals received for a Holter monitor or cardiology consult with necessary testing prior are initially triaged by our team. Depending on patient and referring practice location, the patient can either be booked at the Charles Clinic (Launceston or Burnie sites) or one of the many regional general practice sites which apply Holter monitors through our service.
  • If your practice is provided with Holter equipment and software through our service, the application can be directly applied at your practice with data securely transferred through to our team at Tas Holters.

2. Holter Analysis and Reporting

  • Our team of experienced cardiac physiologists will analyse and provide a comprehensive and accurate report of the Holter data.

3. Review and Recommendations

  • The Holter report generated will be reviewed thoroughly by the Director of Tas Holters, Dr. James Mau. A conclusion and any necessary recommendations will be provided prior to release of the finalised report.

4. Clinical Progress

  • If the initial referral permits, cardiology review and necessary testing prior will be organised by our team based upon final cardiologist recommendations on the Holter report.
  • If the referral was for Holter monitoring only and there were abnormal findings requiring further attention, a letter will be distributed to the referring doctor with recommendations made by the cardiologist.

Our Report

The reporting format includes:

  • Extensive rhythm and heart rate analysis.
  • Assessment of ectopic burden and non-sustained/sustained tachy or brady arrhythmias
  • Analysis of sinoatrial and atrioventricular conduction properties, observed dynamic changes and flanking rhythms.
  • Correlation of rhythm and findings to patient reported symptoms
  • Final review performed by local cardiologist/electrophysiologist providing summary and recommendations for further rhythm and patient management.
